When you’re a revered and adored artist and celebrity, there are several things you typically do. First, you make some amazing piece of work that redefines the cultural norms for that time, you make a big splash and your popularity grows immensely. Then, typically, you shock the world by disappearing for awhile, announcing you’re a Scientologist, or just becoming plain weird. Last, if you’re lucky, and serious about your work, you put your name on a bag of coffee. Wait- what?

Just a the Start of Great New York Roasters & Cafes (Oslo, Propeller, Parlor, & Kaffe 1668)

After a week of exploring New York and Brooklyn, I’ve barely grasped its intricate world of coffee. Pulling from friends recommendations, barista’s favorite roasters, and a little investigation, I came up with a list of New York roasters and cafes that would take me the rest of the month to even scratch the surface of. Hell, it’s a big town, and all these people need their fix. You can find three or four great cafes within blocks from each other- all different, all spectacular. Here’s some places/roasters that stuck out to me these past couple days.

The Hybrid-Cafe: A Trend or Something Much More Substantial?

This week I’m in New York making my rounds of coffee shops and have discovered something I never expected: the hybrid-cafe. Essentially, a cafe that that is mixed and mingled with another business; a barbershop with espresso bar; a florist with Blue Bottle coffee. While it may be a successful business plan for companies that need extra foot traffic, could it start the decline of third wave coffee?
